Carroll Shelby Cobras honored at Monterey Motorsports Reunion / Load em' up...

Heading to Monterey this summer for the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion? If not, give it some thought. They will be honoring the 50th anniversary of the Shelby Cobra. The car is iconic and this also promises to be one of those events not to be missed, August 17-19, 2012 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

It could be said, when Shelby and chief engineer Phil Remington along with some hot-rodders decided to shove a V8 into a British AC Ace roadster and then completed the first Cobras, they had no idea that they were making car history. Between 1962 and 1967, 998 Shelby Cobras were constructed, 289s and 427s. It is estimated that 120 of the 998 were competition cars.

Load it up, let's go kick some butt.

Cobras will be transported from as far away as Switzerland, the  U.K., Canada, and here in the U.S. to participate. Many of these cars have not been seen on these shores before. There will be a special race of 45 cars that were accepted ( a record), based on the their racing provenance and period correct appearance. It's also pretty cool, that several blog followers will be racing in this race as well as other races. One of those is Donn Vickrey with his King Cobra. Donn will also running a 289 Cobra and GT 350.

The event will be bitter-sweet with the recent passing of Carroll Shelby, arguably one of the most recognizable names in motor racing. I'm sure there will be many stories told for all of us to hear over the PA and how could you miss the heart pounding sound of his machines at Laguna?

Not to be forgotten, there are so many cool cars that show up for the different races, this is the place to "See and be Seen!" "Along For The Ride" will be there with camera in hand.

It's not too early to make plans now to be a part of this event. You can find more info at this link: http://www.mazdaraceway.com/events
