Coronado Speed Festival...Caught by the Lens

If you road race up Laguna Seca way, you may recognize this image of the ultimate car cantina, shot in Carmel Valley. However, this post is not about that hangout. It's about the recent Coronado Speedfest and shots of some badass machinery. The photos from this event form a bridge between past racers and current drivers looking at time through the rearview mirror.

Given voice by their authors, all photographs are storytellers. Weather the engine is not beating, or the car is sliding through the corner teasing the edge, a photograph is a moment suspended in time. I've been asked by friends to capture their rides with a digital image.

You can find them at the link below. If you ran the event and don't see a shot of your car, contact me, I have others.

Almost a Mean Mugging...

The backstory goes like this. I'm rounding the corner by the Cypress Inn in Carmel, and spot the "Moal" built rod sitting on the street. I was there to shoot photos for the Carmel Concour the next day, but this baby was too much to pass up. Grabbed my camera and prepared to get the shot, but before I knew it, a grocery getter pulled up inches from the back of the rod. I sheeplessly asked the driver to please back up for a minute so I could get a shot. He just smiled, winked at me and left it in place. I winked back all the well knowing, that in little more than a "Bam..." with post-processing he would no longer exist. Hope you enjoy the shot with a vintage flair.

Just a Snapshot...

"Just a Snapshot" is exactly what Strother MacMinn took when he spotted this Delahaye sitting on a Pasadena used car lot next to an MG in the very early fifties. Strother knew genus when he saw it, and well he should have. He was a mainstay in the world of automotive design for close to fifty years, spending his time teaching young students how to find taste and innovation within themselves at the "Art Center School." The school was renamed, the "Art Center College of Design" after it was moved to Pasadena. Imagine what he thought when he spotted the now famous Delahaye waiting for some person to make an offer and drive away. If only we could turn the clock back to witness rolling art like this being offered up as used cars.
