Pedaling Hard at the Monterey Motorsports Reunion?

Laguna Seca, the earlies not only witnessed the oak dotted hills, but also the vibrations of Twin-Cams, Birdcages, and monster Can-Ams. The Reunion is none-the-different, it brings them together again.

If you're one of the blog followers running a car/cars at the Monterey Motorsports Reunion in August, email me your type of car, car number and run group. I'll be there with camera in hand to record images on the digital screen, for a story on the blog. You can get the email by clicking here.

See you there!

Some Old Salt... Bonneville

It's been on the bucket list for some time now...maybe some day I'll get there. In the meantime here's some "Old Salt."

A look at the early SoCal '34 Ford coupe that set a 153 mph record in 1951. Two years later, in 1953 it would be back with a different engine to set a new record of 172 mph.

Trans-America Rally ... Replay

As the wet and wild trial rally hit the record books, Brant Parsons and his son, John, who did the navigating, took on the pre-run event in Canada and Alaska  as a "run it as hard as we can" affair. It was done to prove the car before Stanley Gold and Brant head for the Peking to Paris event in the 1965 Porsche 911. During this rally, they found they had four other 911s as company, two 1965 cars, a '69 911 and a '73 Carrera RS.

Just a Day on the Strip... / Barona Antique Drags

The pungent smell of burning rubber wafted through the air. As the smoke cleared, another run of 6.45 was layed down on the black as tar strip.   Barona’s Antique Drags were well launched into the day with over 150 entrants, the 42nd installment. This twice yearly event grows larger time and again. The rides on the track are ’75 and older, so this totally retro event takes one back to the day before the corporate spitting drivers with cars that barely resemble their ancestors.

The cars had pulled in early and were bound to leave late as plenty of rubber had been vaporized. It is truly a run what ya’ brung gathering with straight axle gassers, old school dragsters, rods, even muscle cars. As usual for this event, there were air filling burnouts, side by side strip long battles, and sky reaching wheelies.

It's Summer and time for a road trip with your buddies and what could make it even better? Stopping for ice cream of course! Get out there and see the country side, but don't forget those binoculars!

The Art of Lowriding...

The exhibition, "Cruisin' Califas: The Art of Lowriding" is running until the end of September at the Oceanside Museum of Art. I got word of it and took in opening night to find out more about this lifestyle that's part of our car culture.

After World War II, the car culture exploded as returning Anglo service men started buying used cars and reaching for more speed by building "Hot Rods." It had been simmering for a long time, but was now at full tilt. As the Mexican-American servicemen returned, they reached back to their heritage to reignite their car culture, and lowriding.
