La Jolla Concours d' Elegance ... Rubies on the Grass

This is one of the "big boy" shows on the Concours schedule here in So-Cal. So guys leave the sweatshirts at home and break out the classic Ray-Bans, straight leg jeans, white tees, fitted leather bomber jackets and loafers by Scarpe Di Bianco ala James Dean, with your best girl on your arm to check out the machinery.

This is one of the few concours that I know of that honors not only the cars, but the restoration shops and restorers that perform their magic on the metal. All of this plays out in one of the most beautiful settings on the west coast...La Jolla's Ellen Browning Scripps Park.

The date for the show is this Sunday, April 1st, the weather looks like it's gonna' be dynamite and the waves big to rock the good vibes on the grass.

As a side note, this year, several blog followers have entered their rides; Skip and Leslie Shirley, Steve and Araceli Lopez, Tom and Bev Gould, Dale and Lorena Sommerfeld. John Bessey will bring an MGC/GTS and Donn Vickrey will be showing his radical Shelby King Cobra. Remember, this is not an event to be missed...be there!

Goodguys Del Mar Nationals

The Goodguys show is an event that can't be missed. If you're a So-Cal guy here it comes this weekend, March 30-April 1 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. This vintage poster was found from days of auto racing when people couldn't wait to get to their closest track to hear the sound of roaring engines. Well I guess it's still the same today, there are just fewer tracks around. Can you imagine the looks on the horse race crowd watching V-8s rumbling around Del Mar today?

So if you're around the area, head out to Del Mar where hot rod legends Ed Pink and Ed "Camfather" Iskenderian will be honored during the weekend. There will be a huge "Woodie" display and one of my favorites, the nitro-dragster display where they fire them badass babies up to vibrate your intestines. Just wonderful...pure power! Can't wait...

How'd They Film That...?

If you're a Porsche fan and on the Internet, the 'YouTube' videos have been flying around announcing the new 911 filmed at the Rennsport event held at Laguna Seca, 2011. Well here's a look at one of the cars they were using to pace the red 911 being filmed.

I guess if you're going to chase one, you need to drive one with Canon EOS 7Ds stuck on to do the deed.

Diamonds in the Light / Temecula Rod Run...

Shuffling along the street as bands jammed the music, all I could do is admire the cars, like diamonds shining bright. The morning light was just right, I say for photography and picture that, with a Kodak. Not me...I hooked up with Brett Christenson to bring you some of his shots. Gotta' love the digital life we live. I've included a link at the end to more of his work. Check these out...

Gas Pains...

With gas prices on the rise, it's giving me noting but gas pains every time I motor up to the premium pump. Long time friend and blog follower, Bob Lampert sent this image to me. This may be what I resort to to get around.

Back in the day, salesman Mike Dreschler has his motorised roller skates refuelled at a gas station near Hartford, Connecticut. He had a single horsepower air-cooled engine strapped to his back and holds a clutch, accelerator and engine cut-off switch in his hand. Looking at the pump...this is when gas was real gas!Via Getty Images.

Nothin' but a Necker / Necker Knobs

Tommy felt the warm, smooth plastic in his hand as he one-handed the large steering wheel, swinging around the corner while laying on the gas. The rear of the '56 Chevy spit gravel out from under the skinny white walls, while whipping back and forth laying down a man sized brodie . It was just another night, out with his girl as they headed to the drive-in. So, how was he able to lite up his face wielding a boat sized steering wheel? Here's the story...
